 interior views of my yurt

I am very pleased to welcome you into my home and studios.  When Valhalla Textile Center is in session, I move into my yurt and give my home and studios fully over to the participants.  You will find fine living in a wilderness setting.  Participants will have the best of both worlds, staying in an area of unsurpassed natural beauty while still living with luxurious creature comforts.

I designed my home and studios after camping on the building site for 6 years.  The results are living and studio areas that really fit into the surrounding area.  The southeast side of the building overlooks the Rosebery Bay and the southwest side, with the weaving studio and finishing porch overlook the Slocan Lake and the Valhalla Mountains.  There is a path from the finishing porch down to the Slocan lake and a beach area for swimming or canoeing for those adventuresome souls! As well, there is a “rails to trails” path that runs along the lake for easy hiking.  There are no houses for 10km until the north end of the Lake so wildlife abounds.  Because the building is situated on the side of a mountain, it is NOT wheel chair accessible.  Participants have to be able to negotiate stairs and sloped paths.

The building was designed with a combination of the aesthetics of the Arts & Crafts movement (late 1800’s – early 1900’s) and my Norwegian Heritage.  It is a combination of old sensibilities and new ecological building methods and materials.

The interior abounds with natural materials, larch plank floors, hickory cabinets, granite countertops, Douglas fir windows, clear fir wood-working and doors, sand cast bronze door levers and much more. Fine craftsmanship abounds with the Italian glass mosaic tiles, tin ceiling, stained glass windows, and William Morrris wallpaper.  The interior is filled with family antiques from the 1700’s & 1800’s eastern United States.  The walls and floors are covered with an extensive art and Textiles collection.  The interior environment, combined with the views from the windows is sure to give participants a total aesthetic experience.
